I have been waiting for an opportunity to shoot a thunderstorm all summer. Several months ago I set out after what appeared to be the perfect lighting show. I soon discovered that it was a little too good, when I found myself encompassed by constant flashes and boom’s which gave the effect of a grand finale on the 4th. After reflecting back on an educational video about the victims of lightning strikes, I decided not to get out of the car.
About two weeks ago I noticed another good opportunity. A large storm was moving parallel to the highway at a slow pace, so I set out after it. As I headed south down I-25 and I attempt to get ahead of the storm, I noticed that the clouds would also brings a great sunset. I aimed to position myself to catch both spectacles and I lucked out.
I took the first three pictures from the same spot. The storm was large enough that I was able to catch the clouds as they rolled and spun into its center. Shortly afterward I sped ahead of the storm in an effort to get another couple shots and avoid the large hail. My only regret is that I didn’t have a wide angle lens.
Fantastic photos!
